Sri Lanka

The island that fits in the palm of your hand

Sri Lanka is an Indian Ocean island that fits in the palm of your hand and never runs dry. In fewer than 66,000 square kilometres it packs eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, two mountain ranges, Buddhist fortresses carved from rock, tea plantations draped across terraced hillsides and the highest concentration of leopards on the planet. It is Asia for the traveller who has already covered Asia — and at the same time, Asia for the curious first-timer.

The island that reads like a dense and rewarding book

Sri Lanka entered the curious traveller's imagination through the tea-country train — and stayed because of everything else. At its centre, Sigiriya rises above the jungle like an impossible fortress. In the hills, Kandy guards the Sacred Tooth Relic as the railway cuts through high-altitude plantations. In the south, the walls of Galle Fort face the Indian Ocean. This is a curated destination: it does not work on autopilot or in a sealed package — it works when someone applies genuine discernment. The right coast for the monsoon season, the right driver-guide, the right bungalow in Yala and the right hour to arrive at Sigiriya. Done that way, Sri Lanka delivers a journey on a human scale, where transfers are measured in hours, not days.

Colombo

The contemporary urban gateway

Colombo bears no resemblance to Sri Lanka's preconceived postcard. There is Dutch colonial architecture mixed with gleaming new towers, red mosques a block away from Hindu temples and a seafront promenade where the city exhales at dusk. It functions as either the opening chapter or the closing note of any journey.

Intermezzo

The island recalibrates the eye.

A rock fortress rising above the jungle. Two mountain ranges and tea plantations draped across terraced hillsides. A blue train winding through the highland mist. Buddhist temples carved into stone and a Dutch fort facing the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka does not reveal itself at a glance — it must be crossed slowly, with respect and with a local voice to guide the way.

The left hand Considered impure. Receive, hand over and eat with your right hand.
The Sinhalese "yes" A side-to-side head wobble means yes or understood — not no. It takes a couple of days to get used to.
Poya Day On every full moon, alcohol sales are restricted. Licensed hotels continue to serve.

Questions

Questions we are genuinely happy to answer

No unnecessary disclaimers, no inflated marketing copy. These are the questions Sri Lanka travellers ask us most.

Do I need a visa to enter Sri Lanka?
Yes. Sri Lanka operates an Electronic Travel Authorisation — the ePASS — processed online before travel and typically approved within one to three working days. A valid passport with at least six months of remaining validity from your entry date and two blank pages is required. CocoVolare guides you through the process but does not apply for visas on behalf of clients. Immigration rules change: always verify before travel.
What is the best time to visit Sri Lanka?
It depends on the coast, as the island has two opposing monsoons. December to March is optimal for the south coast, the west, the cultural triangle and the highlands. May to September is when the east coast shines — Trincomalee and the surf of Arugam Bay. There is always one side of the island in peak season: it is simply a matter of choosing wisely. October and November are the least recommended inter-monsoon window.
How many days do I need to see Sri Lanka?
Seven nights cover the cultural triangle, tea country and the south coast without exhaustion. Ten to twelve nights allow you to add Yala or Wilpattu and proper time in the highlands. Fourteen to eighteen nights include Trincomalee or Jaffna, or a Maldives beach finale. CocoVolare designs itineraries from five to twenty-one days, tailored to pace, profile and season.
What currency is used in Sri Lanka?
The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR), with a reference exchange rate of around 300 LKR per USD. Bring crisp, unmarked notes — money changers refuse worn bills. Change some on arrival at the airport and use Visa or Mastercard at boutique hotels, tourist restaurants and supermarkets. Tuk-tuks, markets, temples and rural areas are always cash-only in rupees.
Is tap water safe to drink in Sri Lanka?
No, tap water is not drinkable. Always use bottled water with an intact seal, even for brushing teeth in modest accommodation. Boutique hotels provide filtered water in glass bottles. To avoid traveller's gastroenteritis, eat at places busy with locals and request drinks without ice at small establishments.
Is it safe to travel to Sri Lanka?
Yes. Sri Lanka is one of the safest countries in South Asia for travellers. Street crime is rare, violent robbery is exceptional and harassment is low compared with India or North Africa. The country stabilised after the 2022 economic crisis. The most sensitive areas are marginalised districts of Colombo at night. CocoVolare designs itineraries only within areas with verified tourism coverage.
How much does a trip to Sri Lanka cost?
A boutique ten-day trip, excluding international flights, starts at around USD 2,300 per person in double occupancy at three-to-four-star boutique hotels with a private driver-guide and two nights in planter bungalows. A CocoVolare boutique journey runs between USD 350 and 700 per person per day, depending on category and season. Every quote is adjusted to your actual travel window.
Is Yala worth it for leopard sightings, or is Wilpattu better?
Yala has the highest leopard density on earth but also the heaviest jeep traffic — over a hundred jeeps enter Block 1 between 6:30 and 9am. Wilpattu is larger, quieter and offers similar leopard and sloth bear sightings. CocoVolare typically recommends Yala Block 3 or Wilpattu, always with a private jeep and a certified tracker at dawn.
Is the panoramic train from Kandy to Ella worth it?
Yes — it is one of the world's most beautiful railway journeys. The full route takes about seven hours; the most spectacular stretch is from Hatton to Ella. For a boutique experience, we recommend doing only the celebrated stretch in observation class, reserved six to eight weeks ahead, with the driver-guide collecting luggage and meeting you at the station. Without a reservation, you travel standing.
Does Uber work in Sri Lanka?
Uber operates in Colombo and some tourist areas, but the local app PickMe has better national coverage and works with both tuk-tuks and cars. Outside cities, CocoVolare coordinates all transfers with a dedicated private driver-guide. Download PickMe before you arrive — it resolves 80% of tuk-tuk fare disputes.
Is Sri Lanka a good destination for foodies?
Yes — and one of the most underrated. Sinhalese cuisine is not Indian, though it shares spices: the difference is coconut, present in almost everything. Rice and curry is a table construction of six to twelve distinct curries. Between Sinhalese cooking, Jaffna Tamil cuisine, coastal Muslim food and Colombo Malay cooking, there is more than enough variety for a complete food journey, with chefs like Dharshan Munidasa on Asia's 50 Best.
Can I travel to Sri Lanka with children?
Yes, with the right design. Distances are short, the food is flexible and family-friendly hotels are plentiful. The key is reducing temple visits per day and adding elephants at Udawalawe, surf lessons in Weligama, turtles and snorkelling at Pigeon Island. For teenagers, the Yala safari, trekking at Ella and kayaking through Madu Ganga tend to be the standout moments.
What does a CocoVolare trip to Sri Lanka include?
Itinerary design from scratch, domestic flights where applicable, boutique hotels with breakfast, a dedicated private driver-guide, a reserved observation-class train carriage, certified trackers in the parks, signature experiences, site admissions and 24/7 concierge. Every journey is designed from zero according to your profile, pace and the correct coast combination for the monsoon season.
