United Kingdom

An archipelago of character

The United Kingdom is one of the most underestimated destinations for the discerning traveller. The immediate association is London, and it barely scratches the surface. This is not one country but four: the honey-stone English countryside, the Scottish Highlands with a light that shifts five times a day, the cliffs of Wales and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. A country to be read slowly, by train, with a good coat and comfortable shoes.

A country that changes with every two hours of train

The United Kingdom is a succession of landscapes that shift with every two hours of train travel: the English countryside with its honey-stone Cotswolds villages, the Lake District that inspired Wordsworth, the Scottish Highlands, the cliffs of Pembrokeshire in Wales and the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. All of that fits comfortably within a fortnight, served by a functioning rail network, a global language and a hotel infrastructure that understands what hospitality means. This is a destination for the discerning traveller — you do not come to tick boxes, you come to read it slowly. The right seasonal window, the cities in the right order, the right hotels and a punctual private guide at the museums. Done that way, the United Kingdom delivers more cultural density per square mile than almost any other destination in Europe.

Five United Kingdoms within one country

A global capital, Georgian countryside, a medieval city, Scottish mountains and a Celtic coast. Each region is a distinct journey; every combination bears the CocoVolare signature.

London

The capital that does not reveal itself in a single sitting

What would be the historic centre in any other city is here just one neighbourhood among thirty-two. Gothic Westminster, the City as ancient Londinium, Mayfair with its townhouses, Soho and its theatres. Each district is a small city unto itself, with its own church, its own pub and its weekend market.

The honey-stone heart of England

Intermezzo

This country is meant to be read slowly, by train, with a good coat.

A capital with thirty-two neighbourhoods, each a small city unto itself. Honey-stone countryside an hour away by train. Castles on every ridge and a Scottish light that shifts five times a day. The United Kingdom does not give itself up at first glance — it rewards those who cross it patiently, with a warm coat and a guide who knows the way.

What you need to know before you go

Verified by our travel designers and updated for 2026. Browse by category.

Currency Pound sterling (GBP). The United Kingdom did not adopt the euro and has no plans to do so.
Cards Card payment is almost universally accepted. Visa, Mastercard and Amex work at hotels, restaurants, taxis and most pubs.
Contactless Standard throughout the country. Apple Pay and Google Pay work on the Underground, buses and trains — just tap your phone.
Cash Optional. It is worth carrying 100 to 200 pounds in small notes for tips, short taxi rides, rural markets and villages.
ATMs Machines at banks such as HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds and NatWest dispense pounds without surprises. Use a card with no foreign exchange fees.
Tipping 10 to 12.5% at restaurants with table service if service charge is not already included on the bill. In pubs, no tip is expected when ordering at the bar.
ETA Since 2025 the ETA system has been in force — a mandatory electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors. The process takes a few hours to a few working days.
Latin America Colombians, Mexicans and Argentinians apply for the ETA online before travelling. Verify the current rollout status.
Spain European citizens need only a valid passport to enter the United Kingdom.
Passport Must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry. Immigration rules change — verify before you travel.
Documents Carry printed copies of hotel reservations, travel insurance and your return flight in case the immigration officer asks.
Vaccinations No vaccinations are required to enter the United Kingdom from Latin America or Spain. Yellow fever is not required.
Recommended Be up to date with tetanus, hepatitis A and B and MMR. A flu jab is worth considering for winter travel.
Insurance Highly recommended. The NHS covers emergencies but charges non-residents, and private medical care in London is very expensive.
Water Tap water is potable and of excellent quality throughout the country. Restaurants will serve it free of charge if you ask for tap water.
Pharmacies Boots and Superdrug in all cities. Pharmacists give basic advice without the need to see a doctor.
Train The rail network connects the whole country: London to Edinburgh in 4h30, to Bath in 1h20, to Oxford in 1h. Booking in advance can reduce fares by up to 60%.
First Class Worthwhile on journeys of more than three hours: wider seats, catering included and a dedicated workspace.
Private driver The CocoVolare standard for the Cotswolds, the Lake District and the Highlands, where public transport is sparse.
Apps Trainline and National Rail for trains, Citymapper for cities, Uber and Bolt in all major cities.
Driving Traffic drives on the left. In London we do not recommend a hire car due to the Congestion Charge and the ULEZ zone.
Language English — the mother tongue and global language. The main learning curve is the regional accents.
Accents Cockney in East London, Geordie in Newcastle, Scouse in Liverpool, broad Glaswegian Scots in Glasgow.
Other languages Welsh is co-official and visible on signage in Wales. Scottish Gaelic appears in the north and the Hebrides.
Register British English is more formal than American. Saying please and thank you multiple times is not excessive — it is expected.
A useful note If someone says "not bad", they probably loved it. If they say "interesting", they probably thought it was dreadful.
Queuing Sacred. Jumping a queue is a serious social offence. British patience in queues is legendary.
Silence Silence on public transport is respected. Speaking loudly on the phone on the Underground earns disapproving looks.
The nations Do not call a Scottish person English, and do not confuse the United Kingdom with England. The constituent nationalities matter.
Meal times Restaurant dinners are between 6:30pm and 9pm. Many pub kitchens close at 9:30pm.
The pub You order at the bar and pay immediately. The bar has an invisible order that the barman respects.

We entered the Tower of London with the Yeoman before it opened to the public. The Crown Jewels, in silence, with not a single queue. My husband looked at me and said: this is not something you can buy at a counter. CocoVolare had reserved it months in advance.

Questions

Questions we are genuinely happy to answer

No unnecessary disclaimers, no inflated marketing copy. These are the questions United Kingdom travellers ask us most.

Do I need a visa to enter the United Kingdom?
Since 2025 the United Kingdom has operated the ETA system — a mandatory electronic travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors. The application takes a few hours to a few working days and is completed online before travel. It requires a valid passport with at least six months remaining from the date of entry. European citizens, including Spanish nationals, need only a valid passport. Immigration rules change: verify the current ETA rollout status before you travel.
What is the best time to visit the United Kingdom?
May to September offers the mildest weather with very long days — in June, dawn comes at 4:30am. October and November deliver spectacular autumn colours in the Cotswolds and the Lake District with hotel rates up to 50% lower than summer. December adds Christmas markets and festive lights. January and February are the dreariest months but the most affordable for urban cultural trips. September is our top pick for its balance of good weather, long light and fewer crowds.
How many days do I need to see the United Kingdom?
Five days cover London with a trip to the Cotswolds in a compact but coherent format. Seven to ten days allow you to add Edinburgh and the Lake District. Fourteen days are needed to include Cornwall and Wales and cover all four nations. CocoVolare designs itineraries from five to twenty-one days, tailored to the traveller's pace, profile and season.
What currency is used in the United Kingdom?
The pound sterling (GBP). The United Kingdom did not adopt the euro and has no plans to do so. Card and contactless payments are almost universally accepted, even in village pubs, and Apple Pay and Google Pay work on the Underground, buses and trains. It is worth carrying 100 to 200 pounds in cash for tips, rural markets and small villages. Scotland and Northern Ireland issue their own banknotes, which are valid throughout the country.
Is it safe to travel to the United Kingdom?
Yes. The United Kingdom is a safe destination for international travellers and violent crime against tourists is very low. The main risk is pickpocketing in busy tourist areas of London such as Oxford Street, Covent Garden and the Underground during rush hour. A bag worn on the front resolves most of the problem. Edinburgh, Bath, Oxford and Cambridge are extremely safe cities. Transport strikes can occasionally disrupt plans, so it is worth building in some flexibility.
What is the food like in the United Kingdom?
The cliché that British food is poor stopped being true twenty years ago. In 2026 London holds more Michelin stars than Paris. Contemporary British cooking is hyper-seasonal local produce prepared with European technique: lamb, oysters, Scottish salmon and artisan cheeses. The classics — fish and chips, Sunday roast and afternoon tea — remain firmly in place. Edinburgh excels for seafood, Cornwall for fresh fish and the Cotswolds for farm gastropubs.
How much does a trip to the United Kingdom cost?
The United Kingdom is one of Europe's most expensive destinations. The realistic minimum for a boutique ten-day trip, excluding international flights, is around USD 3,500 per person in boutique hotels with standard-class train. The comfort band recommended for most CocoVolare clients sits higher, with characterful hotels, starred restaurant tables and private transfers. Every quote is adjusted to your actual travel window.
Is it better to start the trip in London or Edinburgh?
Starting in London provides cultural context before the landscape, and flights from Latin America typically land at Heathrow or Gatwick. Some airlines offer direct entry to Edinburgh or Manchester, making these smart alternative gateways for those who prefer not to begin in the capital. CocoVolare designs the city order around your flights and travel profile.
Do I need a hire car for the Cotswolds and the Highlands?
Cotswolds villages, the Lake District and the Highlands are served by local buses with infrequent timetables. For boutique travellers, CocoVolare operates with a private driver by the day or with rural accommodation: it saves time, eliminates tourist traps and allows a driver-historian to accompany the route. Car hire is a valid option but requires adapting to left-hand driving.
Is Edinburgh worth visiting in August during the Festival?
The August International Festival and the Fringe turn Edinburgh into the world's largest performing arts stage, with thousands of shows. The city triples its hotel rates during that window and bookings should be made six to nine months ahead. It is worth it only if you are coming for the festival. If your priority is the city itself, come in May or September and the urban experience is just as rich at a more reasonable price.
What is the difference between the United Kingdom, Great Britain and England?
England is just one of the four nations. Great Britain is the island that brings together England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is the political entity that also includes Northern Ireland. Each nation has its own identity, accent, cuisine and temperament — using the terms interchangeably is an error that gets noticed: calling a Scottish person English is particularly unwelcome. CocoVolare designs itineraries that respect that diversity.
Are the Scottish Highlands worth visiting?
Yes — they are among the most memorable landscapes in the country. The classic route takes in Inverness, Glen Coe, Glenfinnan with its Hogwarts viaduct, the Isle of Skye and the Cairngorms. CocoVolare designs stays at castle hotels such as Inverlochy Castle or Glenapp Castle to experience the Highlands from the inside, with a driver-historian to accompany the journey.
What does a CocoVolare trip to the United Kingdom include?
Itinerary design from scratch, boutique hotels with breakfast, First Class trains between destinations where applicable, private driver in the countryside, private guides at museums and castles, signature experiences, timed-entry site admissions and 24/7 concierge. Every itinerary is built from scratch according to the client's pace, profile, dates and budget — and tailored for honeymoons, families, foodies, slow travellers or adventure seekers.
